He took his nephew John Smith into partnership from 1719 to 1725 (Munter).

He had a long business association with George Ewing and George Risk from c. 1726 to 1756.

In 1756, he took his son William Smith Junior into partnership (Munter).

Boydell (Calendar) gives The Hercules, near the Castle Market in 1729. Munter, under 'Smith, William', states that the Risk, Ewing & Smith partnership began in 1727 but under 'Ewing, George' and 'Risk, George' he states that it began in 1726.]
